I am a certified teacher (Music: K – 12) with an extensive history of professional activity and a demonstrated dedication to the training of nascent musicians.  Rates vary depending on location, level of student, and length of lesson.

INSTRUMENTAL & VOCAL TECHNIQUE LESSONS

I take a thorough approach to teaching performance technique that stresses parallel development in harmony and music theory – the goal being to create well-rounded musicians with a high degree of musical literacy and independence. I am currently accepting students for the following (with credentials summarized beneath):

MUSIC THEORY & COMPOSITION

I hold both a B.A. and an M.Mus. in composition. I am an advocate of formal craft in composition, and I have completed several courses of study in musicianship under a formidable roster of consummate teachers.  Acclaimed musicians and ensembles have performed my music both across the United States and internationally. To see and hear sample of my compositions, please see my list of works.

I am fluent in all levels of music theory, and I work with the individual student to create a curriculum that suits his or her needs and interests. Possible area of instruction include (but are not limited to):

  • preparation for the A.P. Music Theory exam
  • keyboard harmony
  • ear-training
  • counterpoint
  • improvisation

ACADEMIC TUTORING
I have worked for a handful of tutoring companies; most notably, I served as the San Francisco branch head for Overqualified™ Educational Services. I am skilled in a variety of standard subjects, although formal writing and preparation for the verbal section of the SAT I are my specialties. Copying & Arranging

I am available for freelance copying and arranging projects. I have been working with a range of music notation software for well over a decade, and I am currently fluent with Finale 2007. If you provide me with a manuscript or working copy, I can produce professional quality results with a quick turn-around time.

Past employers include David Conte (for whom I did all of the copy-work and MIDI realizations for his recent opera America Tropical) and Peter B. Allen.

Here is a sample page from one of my own pieces:

For more samples, please see the links to score pages in my list of works.

I will also arrange and/or orchestrate your music according to your specifications. The final result can be either a complete score or a recording produced in my project studio.

Please use the contact page to inquire about rates and availability.

Live & Studio Recording

I maintain a complete and up-to-date set of equipment for the recording of live performances. My entire recording studio is highly portable and thereby ideally suited to recording recitals or other concerts at venues that lack in-house recording equipment. Please refer to my biography for a complete description of my credentials and activity as an audio technician.

I offer three different levels of recording services – each of increasing quality and cost:
Option 1: Single stereo electret microphone & digital recorder set-up
  • ideal for simple and economical audio capture
  • up to three full hours of audio
  • immediate turn-around; compact disc presented at completiton of recording session
Option 2: Stereo pair of condenser microphones & digital interface
  • clean and accurate representation of original sound
  • increased presence and sensitivity
  • optional post-recording mastering
  • SAMPLE RECORDING: marimba virtuoso Brandis Moylan
    • excerpt from Ilijas by Nebojsa Zivkovic
    • excerpt from Velocities by Joseph Schwantner
Option 3: Up to six microphones (of various types) & mixing board
  • most customizable and complex sound capture, highest quality recording
  • requires sound check for best results
